Region XI Annual Library Harvest 2012 – 005032
ESC Region XI will be hosting our 14th Annual Library Harvest. The keynote speaker will be Sandra Slough, Coaching Specialist from Institute of Developmental Coaching located at ESC Region 20. She will share communication tips and suggestions librarians can use to collaborate more effectively. More than 70 vendors will share the newest library materials and electronic resources for 2012-2013, new access options, and pricing structures for digital content through presentations and displays. Hear informative presentations from colleagues sharing what works in their library and enjoy the Storytellers’ Theater. Network with colleagues who share similiar job responsibilities. Stay for lunch and more presentations from colleagues. A drawing for great door prizes will complete the day.

Green Prize

The Green Prize for Sustainable Literature has been established by the Santa Monica Public Library to complement the strong commitment to sustainability established by the City of Santa Monica.

The Green Prize for Sustainable Literature has been established by the Santa Monica Public Library to complement the strong commitment to sustainability established by the City of Santa Monica.

The Library wishes to encourage and commend authors, illustrators, and publishers who produce quality books for adults and young people that make significant contributions to, support the ideas of, and broaden public awareness of sustainability. The City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan defines sustainability as “meeting current needs – environmental, economic, and social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.”

The Green Prize is sponsored by the Santa Monica Public Library and the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment.

Most peaches are meant to be kept in the palm of one’s hand. “Giant Peach Yodel!” is a children’s picturebook following a young family as they go the Peach Pickin’ Festival and find that picking a gigantic peach for the festival will prove very difficult. Drawing from Russian folklore, “Giant Peach Yodel!” is a strongly recommended addition to any children’s picturebook collection, beautifully illustrated by Barry Root.–Midwest Book Review

 The Texas Book Festival October 22 and 23 State Capitol Building Austin, Texas!  I’ll be there!

In the delightful picture book The Green Mother Goose: Saving the World One Rhyme at a Time, Jan Peck and her co-author David Davis recycle Mother Goose’s old poems into fresh rhymes with an eco-friendly twist. Yankee Doodle has always gone to town on a pony but now we get the earth-friendly result: “Pony saved on gasoline/ By eating grass of course!” Mary (quite contrary) sheds her difficult reputation once she switches from pesticides to organic gardening. And instead of tumbling down the hill, Jack and Jill “sowed seeds and pulled some weeds/Happily ever after.” It’s a treat to see how each Mother Goose poem is playfully transformed into a timely call to take better care of the Earth. Kids ages 4 to 8 will love comparing the new poems with the Mother Goose originals, and they might also learn a thing or two about recycling and energy conservation. In keeping with the book’s green message, Carin Berger’s fanciful illustrations are created from ticket stubs, newspapers and other reused items. Kirkus Reviews praises the book as “a lively combination of parody and sound earth-saving suggestions.” Peck is the author of many books for young readers, including Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea, part of an ecology series and The Giant Carrot. She is an organic farmer and former cook for a vegetarian restaurant in Fort Worth, where she resides.
